Facebook has reached its 10th anniversary. Facebook (or FB) is the creation of the visionary Mark Zuckerberg. Its growth has been driven by young people, although research shows it is less popular among teens in 2014.

1. When it began – Facebook started 4 February 2004, it was only meant to be a website for college students to meet online in 2005 the site opened to everyone, worldwide.

2. Monthly visits – more than 1.23 billion active or unique users visit Facebook (February 2014) bigger than India (population 1.17 billion).

3. Facebook value – it’s worth around $135 billion and will probably become the fastest in history to reach $150 billion.

4. Facebook users – 23 % of Facebook users login at least 5 times per day and there are six billion likes.

5. Time on Facebook – 20 billion minutes per day is the total amount of time spent on Facebook by users worldwide (June 2013), that is 8.3 hours per month per user.

6. Facebook sharing – 4.75 billion items are shared each day on Facebook.

7. App usage – 66% of total social media sharing is from the Facebook iPhone app.

8. Most popular usage – the number one life event reported by Facebook users is “adding a relationship”.

9. Most discussed topics – among the top 10 most discussed topics are the Syria crisis, the Royal baby and Pope Francis.

10. Popularity worldwide – it’s the most popular social network in every country of the world, with the exceptions of China, Japan, Poland, Russia, South Korea and Vietnam (source: comScore.)
